Oldham is set to welcome a new Lidl supermarket, following approval from the local council. The German retail giant will construct the new store off Albert Road in Hollinwood, just off the M60 and Oldham Road.
The proposed site will cover nearly 2,000 square metres, with over 1,300 square metres dedicated to retail space. This is a significant increase from the original planning application, which proposed a store of around 500 square metres.
After assessing the potential impact on the local area, Lidl was granted permission to expand the original plans. The store, accessible via Olive Claydon Way, will offer 111 parking spaces, including 10 parent and child spots, six disabled bays, and two electric charging ports.
Operating hours are slated to be between 7:00 and 23:00 from Monday to Saturday (including Bank Holidays), and 10:00 to 18:00 on Sundays. Joshua Ambrus, property planner at Rapleys who represented Lidl at the meeting, stated that the new store would bring 'significant investment' into Oldham borough.
The planning document also revealed that the store could create up to 40 jobs, with Lidl emphasising its commitment to hiring locally and offering entry-level hourly rates starting at £11.40, reports .
Councillor Brian Holbin, who represents the area adjacent to the new development, told the recent planning meeting: "It's great that we've got somebody coming in and investing money in the area and hopefully jobs. I look forward to buying the croissants."
The new shop is set to compete with established retailers such as Morrisons on Tweedale Way, Asda on Hollins Rd, and BBM Supermarket on Oldham Rd, all of which are less than a five-minute drive from the development.
