Liverpool's bustling Moorfields station is set for a significant revamp as new plans and designs are unveiled.

The Liverpool City Region Combined Authority has pledged to invest £1 million in the first phase of a comprehensive refurbishment of the key commuter hub.

This initial stage will focus on enhancing the station's aesthetics and accessibility. The proposed improvements encompass new cladding, energy-saving LED lighting, improved signage, a sheltered staircase, and secure, repositioned bicycle storage facilities.

Pending planning and design approvals, construction is slated to commence in October and wrap up by the end of 2025, reports .

Transport chiefs have described this project as the inaugural phase of a wider vision to modernise Moorfields station. Efforts are already in motion to devise 'a more ambitious, long-term transformation' that mirrors the station's significance to Liverpool's commercial district.

Moorfields, an underground station on both the Northern and Wirral lines of the Merseyrail network, ranks as the third busiest station on the network and as Merseyrail's largest underground station.

Access to the station is available via two entrances, one at Moorfields and another at the junction of Old Hall Street and Tithebarn Street.

Constructed in the 1970s as a replacement for Liverpool Exchange railway station, Moorfields officially opened its doors in 1977.

Thousands of commuters flow through Moorfields station each morning, heading to the heart of Liverpool's business district around Old Hall Street. However, the station has shown signs of wear and tear lately.

Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, Steve Rotheram, said: "Moorfields sits right at the heart of Liverpool's business district – but for too long, its main entrance hasn't reflected the energy and ambition of the area it serves."

"Whilst we finalise plans for stations to be devolved locally, this investment is about improving things in the short term – creating a cleaner, brighter, and more welcoming gateway for the thousands of people who travel into the district every day. It's a meaningful first step towards a bigger transformation that will give this part of the city centre an upgraded facility.

"With the country's most advanced new trains already in service and new stations like Maghull North and Headbolt Lane already delivered, we're continuing to raise standards across our network – and Moorfields is next in line."

He also mentioned, "Discussions are ongoing about a total revamp, but these upgrades are another step in the right direction."
