Audenshaw is on the brink of welcoming a new Lidl supermarket as the discount retailer continues its Greater Manchester expansion.
Lidl has confirmed plans to construct a new store on the current site of The Pearl Restaurant. Tameside Council has now approved the planning permission required to demolish the Manchester Road location, paving the way for the supermarket's development.
The lease for The Pearl Restaurant is set to expire in 2029, at which point Lidl intends to clear the site to build its new outlet.
Lidl GB has more than 970 stores across the º£½ÇÊÓƵ, with the nearest existing stores to Audenshaw in Ashton, Denton, and Openshaw.
According to Lidl's proposal: "Lidl GB would like to deliver a new, modern discount foodstore at The Pearl Indian restaurant site off Manchester Road in Audenshaw.
"A new Lidl foodstore at this site would increase shopping choice, provide Lidl's affordable and high-quality products, and create up to 40 new local jobs.
"The Pearl restaurant's lease will end in 2029. Lidl is therefore proposing an outline planning application to agree site access, landscaping and layout."
However, the actual construction of the new store will require a separate planning application.
Last year, Lidl announced ambitious plans to launch hundreds of new stores nationwide, which would result in the creation of thousands of jobs. The company is targeting various locations across Greater Manchester, including a store in Oldham slated to open later this year.
