The Welsh Rugby Union has struck a single gas and electricity supply deal as part of its procurement strategy driving significant cash savings for clubs from the professional level down to the community game.

The deal with Total Gas & Power (TGP) will cover the properties of  200 clubs that are members of the WRU, as well as the union’s own buildings and the Principality Stadium.

The single supply deal was brokered for the WRU by Cardiff-based energy management consultancy Amber Energy.

The new partnership ensures that the WRU is protected against increasing energy costs and uncertainty in the face of Brexit, allowing for greater budget control to help the governing body plan for future projects.

The entire commercial energy market was invited to tender for the WRU portfolio, with Amber Energy carrying out in-depth checks to ensure that the suppliers’ responses met the WRU’s requirements.

As a result, TGP has been appointed as the WRU’s official business and commercial energy supplier.

In addition to powering the 74,500-seater Principality Stadium, Amber Energy applied its supplier relationships to enable 200 of the WRU’s clubs to buy their energy collectively, benefiting from better prices than they would individually.

The collectively energy saving has not been disclosed.
