A new ‘social space’ with a strong focus on ethical sourcing is being brought forward in Grimsby’s Abbeygate.

Following a premises shuffle in the precinct that has seen boutique Paris move to a prominent Bethlehem Street-facing position as wedding dress specialist Proposals took on part of the former Regis hair salon, plans have been submitted to convert the vacated unit into a new venue by Abbys Group managing director Lewis Parry.

The second generation catering entrepreneur is driving it forward, adding to the original Abby’s and Curious Cat portfolio, and said it was a “no brainer” with the unit underneath the expanded footprint of the bistro’s first floor function space becoming available in the independents’ haven.

It is hoped it could be up and running by the summer, with a proposal to trade between 10am and midnight.

Mr Parry said: “It is a completely new venture. We’ve not got a name at the moment, but it will be ethically focused, with sustainability at the core. We see what’s going on in the world, and this will be about local produce, local distillers and brewers, trying to remove waste and even what needs to be recycled, while growing a lot of our produce, and working with firms and producers to source a lot of seasonal produce.”

Set menus look to be discarded as it flexes dished with availability, sitting between the two other venues when it comes to its place in the market.

“The idea is to top and tail what we offer at Curious Cat and Abby’s, make it a social space, very clean ,very simple, serving small plates and bites – simple local fresh food and drink,” Mr Parry said.

A total of 10 jobs are anticipated, swelling the 30-strong team that operates across the venues – with chefs, waiting staff and cocktail bar positions.
