The family behind a Stoke-on-Trent hairdressers and beauty salon are celebrating after reaching a milestone 50 years in business.
Magdalen Hair and Beauty in Smallthorne was set-up by Magdalen Taylor in 1969 after being persuaded by her husband Derek to open the business.
Five decades on, Magdalen's daughter Julie Jones now runs the five-strong salon after it was handed over to her in 1995.
Julie said: "Originally the salon was over the road. But the building was compulsory purchased and we moved across here when I was aged about 21.
"This was a wallpaper shop. Mum took it on and passed it on to me in about 1995.
"I came to work here from leaving school and started as an apprentice. I have seen the styles change over the years. Technology has changed too. One side of the room was all hood dryers. We just have a portable one now.
"A lot of customers used to smoke while having their hair done. Women used to come from work on Thursdays from the potbanks. They used to get their hair done before they took their wages home. The money was then spent on the family.
"The shop has been in the right place. We have always charged competitive prices and tried to keep it down to earth. Our clients are our friends.

"We should have written a book with some of the things that have gone on over the years. We have had some fun."
Founder Magdalen said: "My husband, Derek, persuaded me to start the business. He ran the business side of it.
"The council took possession of the first shop because they said they were going to widen the road but they didn’t.
"This was up for sale. We bought it and gutted it.
"Julie came in when she left school. She wanted to be a policewoman but she stayed. I am really pleased she kept the name Magdalen.
"We have had some very good times. We have had some very good customers. At one point in the 1970s we had a lot of men coming in for perms."
Magdalen's granddaughter - and Julie's daughter - Danika Sigley joined the family business and now works as a part-time beautician.

She added: "I do make-up and skin care which is all very fashionable at the moment.
"It is brilliant the shop has been open for 50 years. Hopefully it will still be going strong in 50 years time.
"I love working here. We have some wonderful customers."
