A historic Wigan accountancy firm has been acquired by Cowgills as it aims to grow still further in the North West.

Bolton-based Cowgills, which also has bases in Manchester and Liverpool, joined mid-market accountancy group Sumer last year. It says the move has allowed it to pursue “an ambitious acquisition strategy” as it aims to grow by 25% over the next 12 months.

Now it has acquired NRB, the Wigan practice founded in 1948 by Norman Richard Barton. The move gives Cowgills a Wigan base and takes its team from 220 to 250.

Cowgills said: “With a strong reputation and a forward-thinking approach, NRB has developed particular expertise in digital technology solutions to support its clients.”

Paul Stringer, managing partner at Cowgills, said: “We’ve been highly selective in choosing firms that share our values and culture—ones that will truly benefit and enhance our business. The team at NRB embodies everything we stand for, and their expertise will be a tremendous asset strengthening our presence in Wigan and Lancashire. Their knowledge in digital technology also presents exciting new opportunities for our clients and our firm.”

Catherine Rogers, NRB, said: “Having been established in Wigan for over 75 years, our priority was ensuring any merger was with a firm that our team and clients could trust completely. We have known the team at Cowgills for many years and are thrilled to be joining forces with a firm that shares our values and commitment to exceptional client service. This partnership marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter, enabling us to continue delivering leading advice while unlocking new opportunities for our clients.”

Cowgills were advised by Dickson Minto and NRB by Forbes Solicitors.
