Six huge gantry cranes are now heading to Immingham from China, key elements of a £33 million investment in the port’s container terminal.

Coming to fruition in 2020 - 400 years since the Mayflower Pilgrims left the town destined for the ‘New World’ of the US – Associated British Ports’ huge upgrade has been named Project Pilgrim.

Future-proofing the terminal and extending its footprint, the six giants will arrive in January, and will be used to stack containers, maximising volumes at the º£½ÇÊÓƵ’s largest port.

Simon Bird, regional director for ABP Humber, said: “The investment in this infrastructure is key to ABP’s expansion plans at the Humber Container Terminal on the Port of Immingham.

“The electric rubber tyre gantry cranes will also reduce fuel consumption by 95 per cent, against non-electric, and will therefore complement our efforts to reduce emissions.”

As part of the investment, the layout will be improved and footprint expanded.

It follows a significant investment on the North Bank, where sailings have been increased from five to 15 weekly.
