At Newcastle University, we believe that collaboration is key to unlocking the full potential of our region.

This reflects our evolving role as a university: not just as a place of education and research, but a civic institution that co-creates solutions with partners across sectors. We’re committed to working collaboratively with businesses, public services and communities to deliver inclusive economic and social impact.

Our bold new Business and Innovation Strategic Plan sets out our vision for achieving this. Where enterprise and innovation are embedded not only across everything we do, but also in the work we undertake with partners.

We’re proud to be building a culture of innovation that delivers impact locally, nationally and globally. One of the most powerful ways we do this is by supporting the creation and growth of companies that translate world-class research into commercial success.

We’ve helped launch more than 40 spin-out companies across health, sustainability, engineering, and technology. Every company is contributing to a vibrant, innovative and investor-friendly economy here in the North East.

But innovation isn’t limited to our academics, researchers and technical experts. Our students are increasingly stepping into the entrepreneurial space, supported by our Start Up programme. From social enterprises to tech platforms, these student-led businesses demonstrate the power of creativity and ambition.

We also recognise our role in supporting the region’s existing business base. That’s why we’re proud to lead the Arrow programme. It is an innovation support scheme that connects regional SMEs with academic expertise in four of the North East universities.

Innovation happens when diverse teams and organisations work together. Universities are engines of economic growth and we are committed to working collaboratively through joint research, co-designed and co-delivered programmes, and shared infrastructure in order to be more responsive and impactful.

The strategy also commits us to strengthening our innovation infrastructure, including our National Innovation Centres and global campuses, and to identifying keystone projects that can attract major investment and deliver transformative impact.

We’re rolling out our new strategy now. We hope that you will join us on the journey.

Our ambition is why we’ve chosen to be an associate partner in the North East Business Awards this year. For 25 years, the awards have celebrated the talent, ambition and entrepreneurship that make our region thrive and we’re proud to stand alongside the businesses that inspire and support us.
