The Government-backed Made Smarter programme, which supports manufacturing SMEs to invest in new digital technology, has expanded in the North East as part of the Government’s new modern Industrial Strategy.
Recognising the impact of the Advanced Manufacturing sector in attracting business investment and delivering growth in the Ƶ economy, the expansion of the Made Smarter programme will mean more manufacturing businesses across the North East region can adopt industry 4.0 and grow their operations using smart technology.
More than 180 businesses - including North East Business Awards-shortlisted company BA Joinery - have already taken part in the programme, introducing a range of new digital solutions to improve efficiency and increase profits. Alexander Battery Technologies, a leading designer and manufacturer of bespoke portable power, batteries, and charging solutions, worked with Made Smarter to implement the world’s first EV Flex advanced laser welder. And in Teesside, The Expanded Metal Company was able to access a grant to part-fund the purchase of a cobot welding machine.
One of the most important parts of the programme is the expert guidance manufacturers receive to create a digital roadmap tailored to their business. Julia Austin, programme manager for Made Smarter in the North East, said: “For many SME manufacturers, introducing new technology into the business might be one of the biggest investments they’ve ever made. It’s important they know the solution they’ve chosen is right for them, and that it meets the specific needs of their business. That’s where Made Smarter can really help.
“Businesses take part in a series of workshops where they get expert advice on a range of technologies - everything from Warehouse Management Systems to AI and robotics. Leadership training gives them the confidence they need to move forward with their investment, and there’s grant funding available - up to £20,000 - to part-fund their purchase. The impact of the programme can be transformational.”
Brett Ramshaw, production manager at Alexander Battery Technologies, said: “Engaging with Made Smarter helped open our eyes to the benefits of digital technology in the organisation.”
