Liverpool Without Walls, a project to create European-style outdoor areas for bars and restaurants, has created a ‘Winter-proof cafe culture’, its organisers have said.

Liverpool BID Company and Liverpool City Council’s, who are behind the project, said plans for the pilot are to be extended as 94 per cent of surveyed people said they want the pedestrianisation of Bold Street and Castle Street to be permanent.

The project was launched in July when hospitality venues began to re-open after strict lockdown measures were lifted and allowed businesses on pedestrianised areas to add semi-permanent structures and electric heaters to outdoor seating.

Liverpool BID are leading a consultation process, which is still ongoing, to work with businesses  to develop a plan that allows a balance of outdoor hospitality, pedestrianisation in key times and allowing access for deliveries, it said.

A business survey is currently taking place among retailers and hospitality to identify any changes and support needed during the winter months.

Bill Addy, CEO of Liverpool BID Company, said: “The first phase of Liverpool Without Walls allowed us to give the hospitality sector, so integral to Liverpool’s Visitor Economy, a much needed boost. Creating practical and safe outdoor spaces that were attractive and have a useful purpose for venues needing more covers, helped to ensure we saw fewer closures.

“As Winter approaches we have to be prepared for whatever the Liverpool weather has in store. Our strategy is to have a European cafe culture that’s prepared for a Northern England climate.
