A major expansion to the town of Howden is being proposed.

Described as a significant sustainable extension, the first steps to deliver a new relief road, more than 2,000 homes, business space, community and sports facilities are being taken.

If fully realised it has the potential to double the East Yorkshire town's population, which stood at just over 4,000 in the 2011 census.

National planning consultancy DPP Planning has been appointed by Pocklington-based JG Hatcliffe Property and Planning to progress the development, linking Station Road and Thorpe Road to the north, south of the rail line.

The two organisations have secured a draft mixed-use allocation for the 110-hectare site as part of the emerging local plan review process.

Once complete, JG Hatcliffe - part of the Broadmanor Group of property companies - will look to submit a planning application for the development, close to FTSE-listed Howdens Joinery's huge manufaturing operations.

It will be based on an indicative masterplan, produced by the developer with strategic advice from DPP.
