A garage owner's bid to halt the construction of four houses on a car park in Altrincham that is used by his customers has been unsuccessful. Anthony Cartwright, who owns Wolf Garage situated next to the proposed development site on Tipping Street, told Trafford's planning committee about the potential impact on his business and the possibility of having to relocate.

Mr Cartwright, who has operated his garage for two decades, said "I have eight to 10 customers cars parked on the land each day.

"I understand that I have no right to park on the land, but there is no alternative provision. There is space for one car to park outside the garage.

"There are very limited spaces on the road during the day because there is mainly permit parking for residents only."

He said it had been the practice for the garage and other local firms to use the land for customer parking.

Despite Mr Cartwright's plea, the committee approved plans submitted by Generation Ltd for three terraced houses and one detached house on the plot, reports .

As part of the approval conditions, Generation will finance a traffic regulation order (TRO) to explore alternative parking solutions in the area. Cllr Dan Jerrome referred to the application as 'quite a difficult application' and, along with fellow committee members, offered sympathy towards Mr Cartwright's situation.

Cllr Simon Thomas mirrored his sentiments, stating: "I think it's an excellent development, although I do have some sympathy with the garage over the car parking. But it is a grace and favour arrangement."

He noted that a pay-and-display car park was available, albeit at a distance, and concluded, "I see no reason why this should not be approved."
