Carlisle United Football Club has been granted permission to convert a residential yard next to Brunton Park into a hardstanding parking area. The planning application for the site adjacent to 275 Warwick Road was approved last week, paving the way for five new parking spaces for the club.

A planning report concluded: "The proposal is considered to be acceptable in principle. The scale and design of the proposed car park is considered to be acceptable and a condition has been added to the permission to require the applicant to submit details of the proposed boundary treatment."

It further stated that the proposal would not adversely impact highway safety, flood risk or biodiversity, and was in compliance with relevant policies in the adopted Local Plan. The local highway authority raised no objections to the application, believing it would not impact the safety and operations of the highway network.

An objection letter was received, arguing that the terraced property block concerned is a unique and historic residential block of traditional housing. It added: "The proposed development will significantly impact the residential nature of the properties, create more noise from the parking and cause potential flood impact to adjacent properties."

A separate report reveals that the planned development aims to convert the rear yard into a new tarmac hardstanding for vehicle parking, with access to the site proposed via Thirlwell Gardens.

It further adds: "The new compound will be fully fenced off from Thirwell Gardens to the east and the remaining rear yard of 275 Warwick Road. A double access gate will be provided at the access point from Thirlwell Gardens."
