Rolls-Royce has secured a £563m contract with the Ministry of Defence to maintain and service engines for Royal Air Force fighter jets.

Most of the work on the Typhoon aircraft engines will take place at the engineering giant's defence headquarters in Bristol.

The agreement will see Rolls-Royce providing maintenance and repair to 130 EJ200 engines, supporting around 200 direct jobs in the process.

The five-year contract was awarded by Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S), the procurement arm of the MoD which is based at Abbey Wood in Bristol.

"This contract builds on more than a century of Rolls-Royce partnership and trust with the Ministry of Defence," said Adam Riddle, president of defence at Rolls-Royce.

"This investment enables us and our supply chain to ensure the Royal Air Force can execute their missions effectively, wherever and whenever they’re needed, in an increasingly complex global environment.â€

Defence Secretary John Healey MP said the contract delivered on the government's Plan for Change by securing jobs in the º£½ÇÊÓƵ.

“Together with our upgrade programme, this contract will ensure our Typhoon fleet remains the backbone of º£½ÇÊÓƵ air defence for the next decade," he said.

Lyndon Hoyle, Typhoon delivery team head at DE&S, added: "This contract not only ensures the continued availability of the Typhoon fleet, it helps drives growth and prosperity within º£½ÇÊÓƵ defence, reinforcing our dedication to procuring capability that equips our armed forces with competitive edge now and in the future.â€

On Thursday (May 8), shares in Rolls-Royce made gains as the º£½ÇÊÓƵ looked poised to secure a trade deal with the US.

The group, which is a prominent exporter of aircraft, marine engines, and power systems, was trading up 3% at 790.60p in early deals, according to CityAM.

Shares in the business have fully rebounded after taking a plunge when President Donald Trump first announced a series of tariffs at the beginning of April.
