Seven extra new business units are to be built on the site of a former heliport in Holyhead to support further employment opportunities in Anglesey’s Enterprise Zone.

In 2019, the County Council successfully applied for £2.3m from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Welsh Government and, in a first for Anglesey, agreed an innovative joint venture – worth £1.6m - with the Welsh Government for the new development on Holyhead’s Penrhos Industrial Estate.

Phase one of the re-development, which was completed in 2020, successfully delivered 10 new business units measuring at 27,600 sq ft. The units have since been fully occupied by locally expanding businesses and organisations.

The success of the first phase led Anglesey Economic Development officers to successfully secure further joint venture funding with the Welsh Government.

The second phase of development will provide 9,900 sq ft of office, light industrial and storage space to enable business growth and provide further employment opportunities in Anglesey’s enterprise zones.

Anglesey County Council’s Economic Development and Major Projects Portfolio Holder Cllr Carwyn Jones said: “The development of seven more new business units on the Island will help provide local businesses the opportunity to develop. It will also help to create new good quality job opportunities for local residents.

“This project is part of our wider plans to further develop Anglesey’s Enterprise Zone. The new units will complement other previously EU backed business premises on the Island.

“They also signal our continuing commitment to improve the economic infrastructures of Anglesey to ensure that local businesses and organisations can thrive.”
