Yorkshire computer games company Sumo Group says it has had an ‘extraordinary year’ with its pipeline of new business opportuities now topping £500m.

The Sheffield company - which also has locations in Newcastle, Nottingham, Leamington Spa, Warrington, Brighton and India - said 2020 had seen it delivery 279 games projects and launch or announce 12 games.

In a statement released ahead of its AGM, Sumo said its Sumo Digital, Pipeworks, Atomhawk and Secret Mode divisions were all trading well and it would soon be opening a new studio in Vancouver, Canada, through the Pipeworks division.

It highlighted work on its Hood and Little Orpheus games.

The last six months had seen it increase headcount by more than 100 to stand at 1,155, including 13 developers taken on when Sumo acquired Polish firm PixelAnt Games in January.

Sumo said that the games market in general was strong and it was actively pursuing a number of takeover targets.

The company said its teams were working from home and, while it had no immediate plans for returning to its studios, it was exploring options for hybrid home/studio working.

It said: “We are very pleased with the progress that the group is making. Trading in the year to date is in line with expectations and the group is well positioned to continue to take advantage of the strong growth in the global video games market.
