Tyneside technology firm Petards has announced it has secured a £1.3m deal to supply its high tech security and surveillance systems to train manufacturer Bombardier.

The Gateshead AIM listed software developer said it has been awarded a contract to supply Bombardier Transportation with its eyeTrain systems, a series of CCTV systems that are built into trains’ infrastructure to help firms monitor and analyse train journeys in real time.

The systems – which include automatic passenger counters, track debris counters and interior surveillance cameras – will be fitted onto the Bombardier Electrostar Electrical Multiple Unit (EMU) trains, as part of an upgrade programme with train owner Porterbrook and train operator Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR).

Earlier this year Porterbrook awarded Bombardier an £11m contract to modify 12 Class 387 Electrostar electric multiple-units for the Heathrow Express shuttle service between London Paddington and the airport.

The upgrade will further enhance the Electrostar’s video and data collection capability by adding Petards eyeTrain forward facing CCTV, track debris/third rail camera and digital video recording (DVR) systems.

Work on the deal starts immediately with the first equipment deliveries starting early 2020, and finishing in 2021.

Bombardier is one of several train firms the Team Valley business works with, having built up a long list of clients from around the world including Hitachi, Siemens and Stadler Bussnang AG.

Last month, in its half-yearly report covering the six months to June 30, the directors said the group’s eyeTrain security, surveillance and other systems continued to chalk up the majority of revenues.
