The North East has been chosen to kick off a national campaign that aims to champion the strengths of the tech sectors in the regions of the º£½ÇÊÓƵ.

The 12 Clusters of Tech initiative will feature every region of the º£½ÇÊÓƵ over the next year, with the aim of highlighting innovative SMEs and start-ups and establishing regional hotspots in different tech sectors.

It is hoped the campaign launched by the º£½ÇÊÓƵ Tech Cluster Group and London Tech Week will show areas of excellence for investors and other interested parties.

With the North East featuring first, the report includes major companies such as Sage, tombola and Tharsus, as well as newer firms making their mark on the tech sector, such as Zerolight, SoPost, Double Eleven and Wordnerds.

David Dunn, chief executive of Sunderland Software City and chair of the º£½ÇÊÓƵ Tech Cluster Group, said: “I am delighted we are partnering with London Tech Week for the development of 12 Clusters of Tech. We will be highlighting some of the amazing companies from across the º£½ÇÊÓƵ and showcasing technology to the rest of the world.

“From exciting startups to established employment powerhouses, there is a lot to be proud of across our ecosystems and we will be telling the story by putting businesses in the spotlight.”

The report - which has been backed by Sunderland Software City, the North East LEP and Invest Tees Valley - highlights the North East’s expertise in areas such as AI, immersive reality and Industry 4.0.

Lucy Winskell, chair of the North East LEP, said: “The report demonstrates brilliantly that we are home to some of the º£½ÇÊÓƵ’s most exciting, innovative and ambitious tech businesses in the º£½ÇÊÓƵ.
