Detection technology company Kromek has announced a $2.9m (£2.3m) order from a US federal body for nuclear security products.

The County Durham firm, which specialises in radiation and bio-detection technology solutions, says the order has come from an existing company for some of its wearable radiation detectors. The order consists of a £358,000 (£287,000) contract for immediate delivery, followed by a further $2.5m (£2m) of revenue over the next two years.

CEO Arnab Basu said: “We are pleased to have received this new contract, which reflects the strength of our longstanding business relationships and the quality of our nuclear security offering. We are continuing to experience excellent momentum in CBRN Detection as the threats to public security persist across the globe.

“We believe our products provide-in-class capability to manage these threats and, consequently, we expect to receive further nuclear security orders in the near term.”

Kromek’s most recent results said it had increased revenues to £7.1m in its previous six months but remained loss-making. The company said at the time that it was “on track to deliver significant revenue growth and positive EBITDA for the year to April 30, 2024.”

Based at the NETPark science and business park at Sedgefield, Kromek was spun out of technology developed at Durham University and has manufacturing operations in the º£½ÇÊÓƵ and US. Its equipment has been used to protect world leaders at NATO summits and is being used in Ukraine.
