Hull broadband provider KCOM has reached a major milestone as it announced over 100,000 customers are now connected to its Lightstream full-fibre broadband.

The telecoms firm, which in August was in a deal worth £627m, completed its ultrafast broadband rollout earlier this year.

KCOM has now revealed more than 100,000 businesses and households have signed up to its Lightstream packages.

Sean Royce, MD at KCOM, said: “I’m delighted that 100,000 KCOM customers in Hull and East Yorkshire are now seeing the real benefits of our cutting edge Lightstream network.

“The full fibre technology we’ve rolled out across our network means the region is one of the most connected on the planet. Indeed, if Hull was an independent republic – as it sometimes feels - it would be the fastest broadband nation on Earth.

“This means our customers can stream, surf and download better than ever before at home while businesses can work faster and more efficiently and compete at a global level.

“Our full fibre network is also providing the foundations for a digital and tech economy renaissance in Hull and the surrounding area.”

KCOM completed its full fibre rollout across Hull and East Yorkshire earlier this year following a seven-year programme costing £85m.

The milestone has been reached as Prime Minster Boris Johnson made the deployment of full fibre broadband across the Ƶ one of his Government’s key aims.

However, the rest of the Ƶ still has some ground to make up on Hull and East Yorkshire, which has 100 per cent full fibre coverage compared to just eight percent nationally.

Mr Royce, said: “We can understand why Boris Johnson wants full fibre across the Ƶ faster than is already planned.

“KCOM took that decision many years ago because we knew that full fibre ultrafast internet access is what customers need and can regenerate economies, which is what we are seeing here in Hull and East Yorkshire.

“Our full fibre Lightstream network is an exemplar to the rest of the Ƶ of how to successfully roll out a world class, ultrafast, broadband network – a network that is already giving our region’s businesses a major advantage on a global stage.”

KCOM hit the headlines throughout the summer as it became the subject of a takeover bidding war between two prospective buyers.

Macquarie eventually came up trumps, as it outbid USS to win the race for KCOM.
