How Derby tech firm’s £1m innovation can help hospitality and retail sectors reopen

Software developed by a Derby IT firm has been hailed as a possible solution to getting hospitality and retail sectors back open for business in the wake of Covid-19.

Launched last year, Derby-based RDS Global’s Black Box software, which cost £1 million to develop, is currently being tailored for use in both industries.

It is being adapted so it can provide data on a range of things, such as the take-up of use of hand sanitiser and monitoring PPE usage, through to checking the temperature of staff.

The Black Box is a cloud-based business intelligence software solution, showing real-time information via online website reports and dashboards.

RDS Global has created add-ons to the original Black Box concept to turn it into what it believes will be a useful tool for shops, pubs, clubs, cafes and hotels, as they look at reopening as the lockdown eases.

Andy Flinn, chief executive at RDS, said: “RDS is working with partners providing health and safety in the hospitality and retail sector.

“We are working with a hand sanitiser provider to add Black Box technology to their electronic dispensing stands to provide data regarding use of sanitiser and order refill requirements.

“We are also now adding the option of an individually-monitored facial recognition and heat check camera to check for PPE-wear with a temperature check that will send an alert to a reception monitor to allow or restrict access to a building.
