How Brexit could impact cybersecurity

Set against the current backdrop of political uncertainty is a cybersecurity industry increasingly worried about post-Brexit threats, discovers Ben Rooth...

Dr Rob Hegarty, Manchester Metropolitan University

Regardless of what happens with Brexit, the impact on cybersecurity is likely to be both considerable and profound.

The reason for this is simple - there has long been a strong partnership between the º£½ÇÊÓƵ and Europe in cybersecurity.

While no one currently knows precisely what the 'cyber landscape' will look like once the º£½ÇÊÓƵ finally leaves the EU, it is widely predicted that the 'threatscape' will rapidly evolve.

For a start, there are increasing concerns over the ever-lengthening skills gap within the sector.

The reason for this is simple - there’s every likelihood that Brexit will impact on the freedom of movement of people in the short to medium term.

And with many cybersecurity professionals coming from the EU, this could immediately hit the sector, according to some industry analysts.

Then there's Brexit's impact on 'regulatory compliance'  - the level to which EU cyber-related standards will continue to apply in the º£½ÇÊÓƵ.

The way data is handled in Britain has so far been modelled on European regulation, with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), an EU-wide regulatory regime which came into force last May.
