Formula One technology is being trialled in an effort to improve wifi connectivity on trains serving the South West.

A 'proof of concept' trial is currently under way on one GWR intercity express train, which operates services throughout the region to Devon and Cornwall.

The two-month trial utilises technology employed by McLaren race cars, positioned on top of the train carriage to capture signals from 5G masts and low Earth-orbit satellites, ensuring continuous wifi coverage.

Devon County Council's full council was informed about the trial, which concludes in January, following enquiries regarding measures to improve internet availability on trains.

Councillor Andrew Leadbetter (Conservative, Wearside & Topsham), raised questions about wifi improvements on trains.

"When I was chairman of the Peninsula Rail Task Force, it was a common comment that even if journeys took some time, as long as the wifi worked, it wasn't too bad, as you could work on the train," he said.

"This now seems to be problematic, so what work is ongoing with the train operators to improve the situation?".

Councillor Jacqi Hodgson (Green Party, Totnes & Dartington), the cabinet member for climate change, detailed the trial currently taking place on one train.
