Much of this design was created by Atomhawk, which created characters, the game’s environments, props and downloadable content, as well as the motion graphic cinematics for its multiple endings.

Tim Wilson, Atomhawk managing director, said: “Atomhawk have worked closely with NetherRealm from Mortal Kombat 11’s original inception through to its release and beyond. The team have created some incredible designs, having great fun playing with the time-travel mechanic that sits at the heart of the game.”

Mortal Kombat is a long-running video game franchise that can trace its roots back to Midway Games, which had a base in the North East before the studio collapsed.

The games numerous environments were also designed by Atomhawk and included locations such as Shang Tsung’s Island, Kotal’s Koliseum and The Sea of Blood. Many of the interactive props created by the studio could also be found in The Krypt, a puzzle-adventure that sits alongside the game’s main story mode.

Mr Wilson added: “The scope for Mortal Kombat 11 was to create the hardest-hitting, most intense game of the series so far. We wanted the design work to live up to these expectations, with characters and environments that could really bring the game’s epic story to life.”
