Flying taxis just a decade away says East Midlands manufacturer

Flying on short journeys could become mainstream with heliports and vertiports becoming a common feature on buildings

The proposed NeoXCraft

Plans to introduce vertical take-off, flying taxis were a highlight of the fifth annual Leicester Business Festival.

A company responsible for developing some of the first electric vertical take-off and landing vehicles said it hoped to bring flying cabs to the º£½ÇÊÓƵ within the next decade.

The team at Derby-based VRCO Ltd – Vehicle Redesign Company – is working on bringing its NeoXcraft into production, and wants to use the East Midlands as the test environment.

The announcement was made at the MIRA Technology Institute, which sits on the vast Horiba MIRA vehicle test site on the Leicestershire/Warwickshire border.

Recently the site has become a major test centre for driverless and connected vehicles.

Management at VRCO say flying on short journeys could become mainstream in the decades ahead, revealing that by 2040 heliports and vertiports could become a common feature on buildings.

The electric aircraft will use four fans which can convert into wheels for the road.

They will be capable of driving short distances and could feature a parachute for extra safety when in use in the air.
