A North East sports safety innovator has launched a £1m crowdfunding campaign to help it ramp up international roll-out plans.

Launched in Stanley four years ago, Rezon creates sports headbands which have been engineered to protect the brain. Its flagship product Halos is designed to reduce the risk of concussion and from the accumulated damage of sub-concussions in contact and collision sports.

Now the firm has launched the seven-figure crowdfunding round in a bid to take the business to the next level. Rezon operates across business-to-business and business-to-consumer channels, with direct sales, partnerships with schools and clubs, and international distribution.

Through the crowdfunding, the company hopes to raise funding to accelerate commercialisation on a global level and expand into grassroots and elite sport. Rezon also has plans to grow its supply chain capacity, and rollout into medical use cases for individuals with heightened vulnerability to head injury.

The B-Corp business, which has already sold more than 2,000 units in more than 30 countries, has opened its funding round through Crowdcube.

Judith McMinn, CEO and founder of Rezon said: “Our crowdfunding launch marks a significant milestone for the future of brain protection in sport. For 30 years I have asked why we protect our shins and teeth in sport, but not the brain?

“I’m very proud of the journey we have been on during these past four years, working with some incredible partners and experts, all in our mission to build a safer future for children and athletes of all abilities playing the sports they love.

“Crowdfunding allows the public to be part of this change, because this is something that directly affects public health. For brain protection to work, it must scale publicly. We want the sports community, parents, medics, coaches, schools and clubs and athletes to own part of this journey, to protect their brain health, and the brain health of the people they love.”
