An inaugural Commonwealth Esports Championships and Commonwealth Esports Forum will be staged in Birmingham this summer.

The championships will feature esports athletes from across the Commonwealth and will include demonstrations showcasing games and the sector's technologies.

The event will take place at the ICC on August 6 and 7 while the Commonwealth Esports Forum will bring together global leaders in the sector at the same venue on August 5.

They have come about as a result of the partnership between the Global Esports Federation and the Commonwealth Games Federation.

The championships has been sanctioned by the Commonwealth Games Federation to be held at the same time as the main 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham while also being independent of its sports programme.

Commonwealth Games Federation president Louise Martin said: "I am delighted that we are announcing the first Commonwealth Esports Championships and Commonwealth Esports Forum to take place in Birmingham this summer.

"Esports is continuing to grow dramatically in terms of popularity and participation, particularly among young people, and we are continuing to look at ways to explore how it can align with the Commonwealth Sports Movement."
