Tapping into the apprenticeship talent pool is one of the best ways to protect your company in the long-term. After all, low unemployment and high demand for staff could impact on both your company’s bottom line and its potential for future growth.

And moulding that talent to suit your specific business can be both rewarding and fruitful, as recruitment specialist Russell Smith explained: “Post Covid-19 the best protection that any business can have is an organic policy for growth.

“This starts with entry-level roles and, of course, apprentices. Investing in the grassroots of your business with your sights firmly on the medium and long-term is the best competitive advantage that any growing business can have.

“Apprenticeships can more and more be tailored to the specific needs of a business and allow you to develop the individual as whole within the culture and values of your business as well as the skills required. Apprentices are one of the vital cogs in that wheel.”

The awards return to Ashton Gate Stadium in Bristol, with a ceremony taking place on Tuesday, May 17, from 6.30pm to 11pm to recognise the achievements of apprentices working and learning in both cities.

For , it is a perfect chance to champion both the apprenticeships and the awards. He said: “We are a long-standing supporter because we believe in sowing the seeds so there’s a crop of good engineers and technical professionals coming through in the South West.

“Bristol and Bath have a long-established reputation for excellence in engineering and that really only gets fed from the bottom up, by investing in apprenticeships and investing in young people getting into manufacturing.

“We have more vacancies than we have ever had - but there is a shortage of good candidates. They will fill that gap in the future. Those apprentices are the skilled engineers of the future that do have a high value in the marketplace. You have got to always look to the future. The only way you can solve the manpower problems is by investing today. Apprentices are a great platform for that.”

Showcasing that emerging talent is great for the apprentices, too. Russell said: “The awards are a really good night out and always energising and inspiring, because you can see just how proud the youngsters are of their achievements. And everyone who gets recognised whether they are winners or nominated gets a real sense of pride.”
