Now, a collaboration between leading energy companies believes the region has the opportunity to become the 海角视频's first integrated hydrogen transport and storage cluster - bringing new investment, supporting skilled jobs and helping secure the future of industry across East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.
is bringing together plans for hydrogen production, transport, storage and industrial use across the region.
Its goal is to make the Humber the preferred location for Government investment through the 海角视频's Hydrogen Transport and Storage Business Model allocation process.
If successful, supporters say the project could strengthen the regional economy, help major industries reduce emissions and reinforce the Humber's role as one of the 海角视频's most important industrial clusters.
Why hydrogen matters
Hydrogen is expected to play an important role in reducing emissions from sectors where electrification alone may not be practical.
It can replace natural gas in industries such as chemicals, heavy manufacturing and steel production, while also serving as a feedstock for ammonia and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), helping attract new industries to the region.
Because hydrogen can be stored in large quantities and used when demand is highest, it could also provide greater flexibility and resilience for the 海角视频's energy system.

The region already combines major industrial demand with established energy infrastructure, skilled workforces and significant underground storage potential.
The proposed network would connect key locations including Aldbrough, Easington, Saltend, Immingham and Keadby, integrating hydrogen production, transport, storage and industrial users within a relatively compact geography.

Supporting jobs and the local economy
For business leaders and local authorities, the economic case extends well beyond energy infrastructure.
According to an independent analysis commissioned by Humber Hydrogen, developing the 海角视频's first regional hydrogen cluster could support up to 53,000 direct and indirect jobs during construction, and approximately 900 direct and indirect operational roles once the network is operational.
Beyond direct employment, investment could generate opportunities throughout local supply chains, engineering, manufacturing, construction, logistics and specialist services, while helping existing industrial businesses remain competitive as they reduce emissions.
Supporters of the project argue that this demonstrates that industrial decarbonisation does not have to come at the expense of economic growth.
Instead, hydrogen infrastructure could help safeguard established industries while creating opportunities for future investment.
A nationally significant opportunity
The Humber Industrial Cluster is currently the 海角视频's largest industrial emitter of carbon dioxide, making it a key location for emissions reduction efforts.
According to Humber Hydrogen, the proposed network has the potential to reduce emissions by up to five million tonnes of CO2 each year at peak operation across the region's industrial cluster.
Humber Hydrogen estimates the region could produce around a third of the 海角视频 Government's hydrogen production target, supported by a combination of hydrogen production projects and strong industrial demand.
Six power stations across the region are investing in more than 4GW of hydrogen-to-power clean electricity capability to complement renewables, representing more than 10% of Britain's average electricity demand, according to Humber Hydrogen.
The organisation says this could be supplied by a combination of green and blue hydrogen production projects operating across the Humber.
Competing for Government investment
Many of the economic and industrial opportunities outlined for the Humber depend on the region securing Government support through the Hydrogen Transport and Storage Business Model allocation process.
The programme is a competitive process that will determine where Britain's first integrated hydrogen transport and storage network will be developed.
The funding decision, expected to support around £500 million of investment during the current spending review period, would provide the infrastructure needed to enable large-scale hydrogen deployment.
Humber Hydrogen believes the Humber offers a combination of industrial demand, existing infrastructure, geological storage, supply chains and skilled workers that make it a strong candidate for investment.
Supporters argue that securing Government backing would unlock the region's potential to attract further private investment, strengthen local supply chains, support existing industries and create new employment opportunities.
