BAE Systems Air is at the forefront of world-leading air power providing end-to-end combat air capability, from design and manufacture to integration, training and support; helping stimulate investment in the wider industry and secure thousands of companies across the 海角视频.

With so many crucial defence and security projects to deliver, BAE Systems employs hundreds of apprentices across advanced, higher and degree levels. Its apprenticeship programmes sit at the heart of a long-term early careers development strategy, providing every apprentice with hands-on experience working on challenging real-life projects and a consistent learning experience.

This year, BAE Systems is the proud sponsor of the , in the Apprentice of the Year category.

Apprenticeships at BAE Systems

Apprenticeships can be a great way to enter the world of work and gain valuable experience and skills, whilst also working towards a qualification. At BAE Systems, there are many opportunities for people to earn while they learn with an apprenticeship.

The BAE Systems site in Brough has a long history spanning more than 100 years in aircraft design, manufacturing and through life support. The work at the site continues to offer vital support to crucial defence programmes as BAE Systems鈥 centre for digital engineering excellence.

The work conducted at Brough supports all of BAE Systems Air products and continues to move towards supporting the Global Combat Air Programme, as well as the Royal Navy鈥檚 .

After increased demands to support vital defence programmes, BAE Systems at Brough in East Yorkshire has begun a recruitment drive to increase the workforce in the area. The amount of highly skilled jobs that are coming into the area has been described as a 鈥榦nce in a generational change鈥, as the activities at the site continue to grow; with a further 100 engineering roles needed.

Apprentices make up around ten per cent of the workforce at Brough and the business is recruiting for new talent to join the team with a wide range of disciplines such as data analytics and degree apprenticeships.

One young person who decided to take on an apprenticeship with BAE Systems is Nathan, who studies a Software Engineering Degree Apprenticeship. Speaking about his time with the company, he said: 鈥淲e get to work on real jets!

鈥淎s a software engineer, I can work on almost every part of the aircraft. One week it could be flight control systems, the next, power systems. It鈥檚 incredible to think that as a first year, I鈥檝e been able to work on software that could be used on the - Tempest.鈥

There are opportunities to work and learn in areas across the whole business, and an apprenticeship is a great way to gain valuable experience and develop your career. The application deadline for this year鈥檚 BAE Systems apprenticeships is Tuesday, February 28, 2023.

Sustainability is key

BAE Systems recognise that the younger generations stepping forward into the world of work and apprenticeships want to work for a business that has sustainable practices at the heart of all operations. Solving the challenge of climate change requires all of us to act together, with urgency. One of the focus areas of the BAE Systems sustainability agenda is to play its part in addressing the significant and lasting impact of climate change, and the company has committed to becoming a net zero business by the end of 2030.

At Brough, the team has taken the opportunity to develop sustainable practices wherever they can. For instance, the Brough site has spent the last two years decommissioning the manufacturing facilities to allow focus on becoming a digital centre of engineering excellence. This decommissioning meant that 700 tonnes of waste were recycled or repurposed instead of going to landfill.

As the old manufacturing facilities were decommissioned, two new contemporary offices were created to allow hybrid working across teams. The new offices were finished with items such as sustainably sourced furniture and LED lighting to allow the site to continue working with sustainable practices.

To take advantage of being situated in the Yorkshire countryside, the Brough site flower beds are filled with wildflowers to enable new wildlife to thrive, as well as a collection of bee hives to support pollination - the honey from which is sold in the onsite restaurant.

From compost bins for leftover restaurant waste to electric vehicle charging points, the BAE Systems Brough site has made huge changes in the way it approaches renewable energy and sustainability.

At the site, there are all sorts of opportunities for apprentices to get involved in work outside of their usual duties, to help build skills and make the site a more sustainable place to work. For example, a new Dragon鈥檚 Den style project has been launched on-site to encourage apprentices to come up with new ideas.

The project involves apprentices working in teams to come up with new sustainability ideas, which they will then present to the site leadership team. Any teams with ideas that could fit in with the other practices on site and help reach the net zero target, will then be taken further.
