Zip World respond to 'disrespectful' claim as Liverpool city centre zip wire plan tipped for approval

Former Royal Marine Sean Taylor vowed company would be sensitive to city's heritage and memorials

Adventure firm Zip World has responded to claims their plans for a zip wire in the centre of Liverpool would be "disrespectful" - as the scheme is recommended for approval.

The North Wales adventure brand wants to 'fly' thrill seekers from the top of the 140metre high St John's Beacon to the historic Liverpool Central Library.

It would be the company’s first zip line outside of Wales, and the fastest urban zip in the world.

The scheme has been widely welcomed but city centre councillors claimed it would lead to the "disneyfication" of the city centre and cllr Nick Small said the zip wire could be disrespectful to nearby memorials.

Members of the council's planning committee will decide whether to approve the plans on Tuesday with officers recommending it to go ahead.

Sean Taylor, founder of Zip World, said: "The overall response to our plans has been extremely positive, but we of course are aware of the concerns and take on board these comments.

"As for myself, a former Royal Marine, any memorial to our armed forces is of great significance and we also have a number of Liverpool FC fans in the team and understand the sensitivity needed around the Hillsborough memorial.

"In fact, we will not operate on any significant memorial days and are in touch with the relevant parties to ensure we know of all services held in and around the gardens.
