The five star Celtic Manor Resort in Newport has started on the latest hotel in its expanding portfolio.

Its Ty Newport Hotel is being built next to its Coldra Court聽Hotel聽by Celtic Manor in Langstone, just a few minutes from the Celtic Manor.

What will be its second Ty Hotel project, under its Celtic Collection brand, the 146-room hotel is scheduled to open in the autumn of next year, with a separate building to house a drive thru Costa Coffee.

Earlier this year the resort, where the 拢83m International Convention Centre Wales will open later this year, added to its offer with the acquisition of the former Hampton at Hilton Hotel at Magor, which has been rebranded Ty Hotel Magor.

The Celtic Collection will also operate a new hotel in the centre of Cardiff on Westgate Street, in a development between the Welsh Rugby Union and Rightacres Property.

Russell Phillips, vice-president, facilities and development, of the聽Celtic聽Collection said: 鈥淲e are delighted to start construction of a new Ty聽Hotel聽and add another property to our portfolio.

鈥淭y聽Hotel聽Newport will bring more employment and visitors to the city of Newport and help the area address a shortfall in the accommodation needs of conferences and events being held at ICC Wales.

"An essential, mid-range聽hotel聽also helps us offer a different kind of accommodation for people attending and working on these events as well as those visiting the city and region for other purposes.鈥

Carter Lauren Construction is the principal contractor on the build project.

Its managing director Neil Carter , said: 鈥淏eing a South Wales contractor, it is a privilege to have been successfully selected to construct the new Ty聽Hotel聽as part of the聽Celtic聽Collection in south Wales.

"Through close collaboration with the client and the design team, we look forward to successfully delivering this project.鈥澛

The ceremonial turf cutting on the project was carried out by the mayor of Newport William Routley.

He said: "It is very important that we expand our聽hotels聽offering in the city to cope with the increasing demand for accommodation brought about by the development of ICC Wales.

"It is vital we keep pace with this demand and ensure the maximum benefit for our communities from this new influx of visitors."
