Welsh retailers welcoming back customers today after 'devastating impact' of lockdown

The Welsh Retail Consortium has seven steps it was asking customers to follow to keep staff and other shoppers safe

Thousands of retailers in Wales will welcome back customers today as non-essential stores reopen for the first time since December.

The lockdown has had a devastating impact on the already under pressure sector and for brands like Debenhams reopening will only be temporary as they sell off stock before the chain vanishes from the high street.

Independents have faired better over the last year but will now need support from shoppers - and Welsh and local government policy makers - after such a challenging period.

While retail is opening at the same time as over the border, outdoor hospitality in Wales has to wait two weeks longer than in England to reopen.

As non-essential stores begin to reopen, the Welsh Retail Consortium(WRC) and its members said the public have a key part to play in creating a safe and enjoyable retail environment for shoppers and shopworkers.

Retailers have spent millions on measures designed to prevent the transmission of Covid, including safety glass, queue management systems, social distancing signage, better ventilation, and more frequent cleaning.

These measures have been updated in accordance with the latest guidance, which addresses issues such as testing of staff, use of fitting rooms, and safe use of air conditioning and ventilation.

The WRC said customers should follow these seven steps to make retail reopening as enjoyable and safe as possible for everyone.
