Welsh Government 'don't expect' new funding announcement for firms until after Senedd election

The government says that the last £150m was designed to cover costs payable until the end of April in blow to businesses

Welsh Government "don't expect" to announce additional funding for lockdown hit businesses in Wales until after the Senedd election on May 6.

This month saw a further £150m made available to support Welsh businesses in dealing with the continued impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

They said this was to help businesses with their costs up to March 31 - with it widely expected more support would be made available for April with non-essential retail closed until April 12 and no set dates for hospitality to reopen.

But today Welsh Government said it had provided support to businesses for invoices owing in March, "therefore covering costs payable through to the end of April".

They added: "It has been designed to cover businesses until after the election, pending the continued easement of restrictions and the outcome of restriction reviews in April.

"To support businesses in the next financial year we have extended the rates holiday for a further 12 months for eligible businesses and ring-fenced a further £200m for future business support.

"We do not expect to announce full details of next year’s support package until after the election."

The last fund saw eligible business with a rateable value of £12,000 or less receive an extra £4,000 grant payment. Firms with a rateable value of between £12,001 and £500,000 will received £5,000 - with the money allocated by local authorities.
