A Lancashire town is set to welcome its own 'Jurassic Park' golf course.

Burnley Council's Development Control Committee has unanimously approved the creation of a new 18-hole links, complete with dinosaurs and a volcano.

Councillors said the innovative 'adventure' course was expected to further enhance the appeal of the once controversial Prairie Sports Village in Windermere Avenue, near the borough's boundary with Pendle.

This new addition will replace an existing pitch and putt facility and a nine-hole miniature golf course.

Whittlefield with Ightenhill Conservative Councillor Mike Steel, who has often played the existing courses with his son, said: "The sports village is an incredibly valuable facility. Now Burnley will get its own Jurassic Park 18-hole golf course.

"It will be something to get young people off their phones and video games."

A statement from Burnley Leisure and Culture read: "The proposal seeks to diversify the existing recreational offer and build on the centre's reputation for attracting children into the sport of golf from an early age.

"Adventure golf courses are built to a theme that includes pirates, jungles, dinosaurs, crocodiles, etc, each designed to capture the imagination of younger children and their families.

"The adventure golf course is a well-established attraction often attached to driving ranges or other golf centres within the º£½ÇÊÓƵ.

"This adventure golf course would have a 'Jurassic/dinosaur' theme and include sculptures, including a volcano, a water feature, an artificial rockwork entrance portal and good quality landscaping."

Burnley Council's growth boss Cllr Lubna Khan said: "The dinosaur-themed golf course will be amazing".

Gawthorpe ward's Cllr John Harbour mentioned that the sports village had initially been opposed as expensive and unnecessary but had turned out to be a highly popular success.

Committee chairman Cllr Mohammed Ishtiaq commented: "This was once seen as a potential 'White Elephant' but is now a lovely facility.

"This course will be used by local people and young people from all backgrounds."
