Struggling North Staffordshire shopping centre to go under the hammer

A number of big-name retailers have left The Roebuck Shopping Centre in recent months

A struggling North Staffordshire shopping centre is going under the hammer at an auction next month.

The Roebuck Shopping Centre, in Newcastle-under-Lyme, is being auctioned off at a guide price of between £650,000 and £700,000.

The 51,498 sq ft building – which is home to 17 shops and links to the town's 655-space multi-storey car park – will be featured among the 34 lots at the Acuitus auction on May 18.

The centre used to house many big-name retailers such as Argos, Next and Bonmarche but, after the majority of retailers moved out, The Roebuck has been left almost empty.

John Mehtab, investment director at Acuitus, said: "Investor appetite for shopping centres with large in-town footprints has been strong in recent months. This property offers current income and the potential for active asset management."

The auction also features a row of shops, also in Newcastle-under-Lyme town centre - 54-55a Ironmarket.

Of the three shops, one is vacant and the others are let to Oxfam and PDSA. Together, they produce annual rental income of £36,250 and will go under the hammer with a guide price of between £300,000 and £350,000.

The auction will start 1pm and will be broadcast via livestream on the Acuitus website with bidding online, by telephone and by proxy.
