Sofa firm ScS creates hundreds of new jobs to cope with massive jump in orders

The firm is also giving staff who worked through lockdown an extra seven days holiday

David Knight, chief executive of ScS

Sofa firm ScS has created 300 new jobs on the back of pent-up demand for its home furnishings.

The Sunderland upholstery and sofa company, which has 99 shops across the º£½ÇÊÓƵ, last week revealed that sales have been very strong, both online and in-store, since its shops reopened in June following lockdown, with many customers spending more than it expected on their homes.

Now the firm, which already employs 1,700 people across its store network and warehouses, has revealed it is creating hundreds of new jobs around the º£½ÇÊÓƵ to cope with a huge increase in orders since the easing of lockdown.

The sofa and carpet specialist hired 150 new employees in August and currently has 150 vacancies for roles in various areas of the business.

The recruitment drive is in response to the recent surge in sales, with the company reporting a 92% increase in order intake for the period from May to July.

It said the trend has continued in August and September, with sales jumping by 51% over the last six weeks.

ScS is looking to fill a range of both permanent and fixed-term positions, with vacancies in its retail stores, distribution and contact centres, with roles including sales professionals, delivery drivers, contact centre advisors and online sales team members

In August, ScS withdrew from the Government’s furlough scheme and brought all staff back into work, having topped up wages to 100% throughout the period.
