The Physician opens on historic Edgbaston estate following £2.4m project to convert former medical building

The Physician in Harborne Road

A former medical building in Edgbaston has reopened as a pub following a £2.4 million renovation project.

The Physician, which is a grand-looking bar and restaurant housed in the former Birmingham Medical Institute, on the historic Calthorpe Estate.

According to council records, the 1830s building in Harborne Road was once used for "middle class interests" such as art and entertaining and owners are obviously hoping the restoration will now bring it back to life.

The Physician is run by group Brunning & Price which specialises in converting and restoring old buildings into pubs and restaurants.

Many of its venues are in the North West and North Wales and are owned by their managers.

In the West Midlands, it owns The Inn at Shipley near Wolverhampton, The Armoury in Shrewsbury and The Red Lion in Longdon Green, near Lichfield and the group was named pub group of the year by the Good Pub Guide in 2013.

There are eight beers and mulled cider on tap

As well as the bar area, The Physician has two dining rooms seating 16 in each, plus a new courtyard garden and orangery as well as four working fireplaces dotted around the pub.

There is also mulled cider on tap, a variety of real ales and space for 192 covers for lunch and dinner.
