Date set for Seafood Week as platform to build on º£½ÇÊÓÆµ's £10b industry

Seafish wants industry to come together to champion consumer campaign

Seafood Week’s date has been set, with the organisation supporting the £10 billion industry encouraging businesses to sign up and get involved.

The annual celebration and consumer campaign will take place from Friday, October 4 to Friday, October 11, taking in the traditional fish Friday double as has become custom.

Grimsby-based Seafish said it offers an opportunity for the industry to come together to promote the wide range of delicious produce that’s available, and the benefits of eating fish and shellfish.

Marcus Coleman, chief executive, told how government health guidelines say that everybody should eat two portions of seafood a week, but figures show that 67 per cent of the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ population consume less the recommended amount.

Seafood Week aims to encourage people to eat seafood more often – whether that’s an easy to prepare midweek meal, a fish supper on a Friday night, a quick snack on the go or as a special treat as part of a fine dining experience.

He said: “At Seafish we’re committed to promoting seafood as the way forward and encouraging consumers to eat more of this healthy food source, which is also one of the most sustainable proteins.

"We know that the nation is currently falling far short of the government’s consumption target of two portions of seafood a week so we’re also working to address this.

“Seafood Week offers a fantastic opportunity for seafood businesses to collaborate on a national campaign to promote the wonderful range of seafood available in the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ. By working together as an industry to reach as many people as possible, we can all help encourage consumers to try and enjoy more fish and shellfish.”
