Plans by budget supermarket chain Aldi to build another store in Derby creating around 40 new jobs have been rejected.

In September, the retailer lodged a joint application, along with Heatherton Developments (a partnership between Ark Capital and William Davis), with Derby City Council, to build the new store on farmland off Rykneld Road, at Littleover’s Heatherton Village.

The new store, offering almost 1,800 sq metres of space, would have been located on land near to the Hollybrook pub.

Accessed from Rykneld Road, it would have been served by more than 120 car parking spaces.

The application claimed that new Aldi would spark the redevelopment of land surrounding the site, bringing more new homes and businesses to the area.

However, the city council has now rejected the proposals for a number of reasons.

It argued that the application failed to show how the new supermarket would unlock surrounding development land and was critical of the fact that the proposed site was “divorced” from an existing shopping area.
