A Cornish farm shop named one the 50 greatest food shops in the world has said it has seen an uptick in custom since receiving the accolade and even sold out of stock the day after making the list.

Padstow Kitchen Garden was named alongside delis in New York, Paris and Rome on a list compiled by the Financial Times.

The business is owned and run by the Geach family, who have sold fruit and vegetables in Padstow since the mid-1800s.

The shop operates from a converted shipping container on Trerethern Farm, south of the fishing town on Cornwall鈥檚 north coast.

Ross Geach, established the shop initially as a hobby 13 years ago, while he was pursuing a career as a head chef in one of celebrity chef Rick Stein鈥檚 restaurants.

It now counts Stein鈥檚 as one of the restaurants it supplies with fresh produce and pork products grown and harvested on the family鈥檚 four-acre farm, as well as cheese sourced from local suppliers.

The Geachs also supply award-winning Padstow seafood restaurant Prawn on the Lawn, which is currently based on Trerethern Farm and trading as Prawn on the Farm for the summer.

Mr Geach admitted to feeling 鈥渟hocked, but proud at the same time鈥 when a colleague shared the news about the shop receiving the honour.

Mr Geach said: 鈥淓mma, who works for me, had the link to the list and she sent it to me and I couldn鈥檛 believe it.

鈥淚 made a joke, when you look at the list and see the people on there it's kind of like, 鈥楴ew York. Paris. Milan. Sydney. Padstow.鈥 It didn鈥檛 quite sound right! But I read the article and I was completely blown away by it!

鈥淚t鈥檚 quite hard to manage a shop that isn鈥檛 on the high street and extremely busy, we haven't got footfall like that, people have to make an effort to come to our farm.

鈥淚n the last 12 months during lockdown it has been really hard, the shop got so busy and we were working so hard. To get an accolade that makes all the hard work worthwhile.鈥

Mr Geach said supplying restaurants accounted for 95% of the business and when venues were forced to close during the pandemic, Padstow Kitchen Garden quickly adapted to become a veg box delivery service.

The business was able to pick up new customers around Padstow, St Columb Major, Newquay and Wadebridge.

Mr Geach said: 鈥淲hen supermarkets started running out of veg, everybody came to me. I think I have kept about 20% of those people. A lot of them can鈥檛 afford to buy the value I have to charge for my veg because its harvested, planted and sewn by hand, it's very labour intensive.

鈥淭here鈥檚 no way I can compete with a supermarket, ever. A lot of people did go back to supermarkets, but I am really happy to say we kept about 20% of those customers we picked up during lockdown.鈥

Mr Geach said featuring on the Financial Times list had definitely helped the Padstow Kitchen Garden to attract new customers to the farm.

He said: 鈥淚t鈥檚 a bit embarrassing, but because I didn鈥檛 know we were going to be on the list, the day after it was published we sold out of everything.

鈥淧eople were still turning up a bit later that day and I just hung around and made a bit of a joke out of it and apologised.

鈥淲e never expected to have that report, I would never have normally sold that amount of veg. I said 鈥楽orry, the cheese is gone, the bread is gone, the veg is gone!鈥

鈥淭he next day I got to the farm early and harvested lots of stuff, did a bigger cheese and bread order. It hasn鈥檛 been overly busy but there鈥檚 new customers that live locally within around 15 miles that said 鈥極h we didn't know you existed but we saw you in the Financial Times鈥. So it has definitely made a difference.鈥

Mr Geach grew up in his parents' fruit and veg shop in Padstow which he said his father later decided to sell after a Tesco arrived in the town and 鈥減eople lost their way with local produce.鈥

He said he was "born to work" on the family farm and returned to his growing roots once he saw an opportunity to capitalise on Padstow鈥檚 flourishing food scene. And he insists he will not let the acclaim the Padstow Kitchen garden has received change what has made the shop so popular.

鈥淚 could see us in the future having a bigger shop but I wouldn't want to lose the authenticity of it. I don't want to be a pretend farm shop, I鈥檝e always wanted it to be properly Cornish, seasonal and real," he added.

Two other food shops in the South West were also included on the Financial Times鈥 global list: Beachwood Bakery in Devon and Spanish deli El Colmado in Bristol.
