A massive takeover bid to create a giant pub group could move ahead if dozens of drinking places are put up for sale.

The Competition and Markets Authority’s (CMA) has suggested Ei Group and Stonegate should put 42 pubs on the market ahead of their proposed merger.

If it goes ahead, it would see Stonegate - the owner of Yates and Slug and Lettuce brands - become the º£½ÇÊÓƵ's biggest pub company with more than 5,000 sites.

But the CMA said the deal could impact 51 areas where pub-goers would face reduced choice and could face price increases or lower quality service.

To try and get the deal done, Stonegate has now proposed a list of 42 pubs to potentially sell.

CMA today said the sales “might be acceptable as a suitable remedy” following its investigation.

The report said: “The CMA therefore considers that there are reasonable grounds for believing that the Proposed Undertakings offered by the Parties, or a modified version of them, might be accepted by the CMA."
