'Open sites, extend furlough and change two metre rule' to save thousands of North Wales tourism jobs

North Wales Tourism issues stark warning after survey analysis reveals depth of problems facing sector

Thousands of North Wales tourism and hospitality jobs are set to be lost even if Wales opens on July 1 - unless there are changes to the two metre rule and furlough scheme.

Analysis from a survey conducted by North Wales Tourism with support from the North Wales Mersey Dee Business Council painted a stark picture for the sectors.

It found that around 10,500 jobs will be lost in the tourism and hospitality industry in North Wales even if it’s allowed to start trading again on July 1 – with another 2,000 at risk if it’s a month later.

Welsh Government's cabinet is meeting to review lockdown measures today and will announce any changes on Friday.

First Minister Mark Drakeford

They are under intense pressure from sectors like tourism, hospitality, property and health and beauty to ease measures while º£½ÇÊÓƵ Government is being asked to extend furlough beyond October.

The survey showed that even when tourism and hospitality businesses are allowed to open, 60 per cent of them will be trading at 50 per cent or less capacity with the current social distancing guidelines.

According to Jim Jones, the chief executive of North Wales Tourism, the survey - in which 320 businesses responded - had underlined the “cataclysmic” impact the pandemic was having on the sector.

He said: “If businesses are allowed to open on 1 July, average turnover loss for the year will be 58% and the forecast is for 10,500 job losses which represents 25 per cent of those currently employed in the sector in North Wales.
