Online sales of garden furniture and BBQs helped historic department store's sales and profits surge

Sales of garden furniture and barbecues helped the historic department store

Online sales of garden furniture and barbecues helped a Lancashire department store, which was founded in 1936, increase its sales by more than half during its latest financial year.

Dawsons Department Store has reported a turnover of £44.9m for the 12 months to September 30, 2020, up from £29.7m during the prior year.

Pre-tax profits at the company, which has its original site in Clitheroe as well as another one in Skipton, also surged from £1.5m to £5m.

The business, in newly-filed documents with Companies House, said the rise in its sales is because of the Covid-19 pandemic and good weather.

The surge in online orders made up for the loss in sales at its stores which were forced to close during lockdown.

A statement signed off by the board said: "The directors consider the results to be very good considering the current economic climate and the difficulties in high street retailing.

"Since the year end internet sales have continued to perform well, however the increase in shipping costs will place a downward pressure on margins for 2021.
