To say it's been a mixed seven days on the high street would be something of an understatement.

Physical retail has taken something of a battering in recent months, with scores of store closures, job losses and hits to profit.

Despite a few positive announcements such as bank openings and supermarket expansion, the past week has involved a similar picture, with no end in sight to the current doom and gloom.

Here are nine updates detailing the biggest stories from the high street that you may have missed over the past seven days

1. July was an awful month despite 'relentless' discounting

Disappointingly for high-street retailers, "relentless" discounting - and high temperatures - were not enough to save them from having an "awful" July.

BDO found like-for-like sales in high street stores rose just 0.1% in July, capping a "tough first half of the year", .

And it was in-store lifestyle sales that took the shine off the figures - falling 3% compared to July last year to register their worst July performance on record.
