Matalan confident as it eyes profits jump after lenders take control

The new chief executive of Matalan has said the fashion retailer is confident it will see a jump in its profits despite the challenges of the cost-of-living crisis.

Jo Whitfield's comments come as the company released its first financial figures since being taken over by its lenders in January.

Matalan has reported a revenue of £263.6m for the 13 weeks to May 27, 2023, down from the £286.5m it posted for the same period in 2022.

For the five weeks to July 1, 2023, its revenue totalled £122.5m, up from £116.1m.

Matalan added that it expects to report an EBITDA for its current financial year of between £60m and £65m.

Chief executive Jo Whitfield said: "Building a strong leadership team to take the business forwards has been a key focus for me in my first three months in role.
