Matalan boss warns of Christmas shortages as supply chain crisis continues

However new accounts show Matalan has returned to making a half-year pre-tax profit

The boss of Matalan has warned the availability of its products will "remain somewhat compromised" in the lead up to Christmas because of the on-going supply chain crisis.

Executive chairman Steve Johnson added the Liverpool-headquartered retail giant has been "feeling the impact of disruption within the inbound product supply chain, delaying the flow of stock into the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ and adding extra costs into the process".

The update comes as the company announced its results for the second quarter of its financial year, the 13 weeks to August 28, 2021, as well as its half-year accounts.

Matalan has reported a Q2 revenue of £264.7m, up from £258m, while its achieved a pre-income tax and exceptional items profit of £10.7m, compared to a loss of £23.8m during the same period in 2020.

For its half-year, the company has reported a revenue of £486.5m, up from £333.3m, while its made a pre-tax profit of £400,000, a rise from a loss of £78.4m.

Mr Johnson said: "Today’s results reflect the first full quarter of trading across all channels since before the start of the pandemic.

"Having seen a terrific customer response to stores re-opening in the spring, we quickly cleared much of the winter stock overhang, allowing our focus to be on new ranges during the summer.
