Manchester's "first boutique hotel" could be set for a major refurbishment to keep up with rising standards in the luxury market.

The Great John Street Hotel began operating in 2005 and the property had previously been The Atherton Street County School and later part of the Granada TV complex.

It was bought by The Hut Group last year and now plans have been unveiled for a major revamp.

This will include a refurbishment of the bedrooms, see the existing rooftop bar reconfigured, and a new external glass lift shaft installed.

There would also be a single storey glass extension on the Little John Street side of the hotel.

Plans have been prepared by Euan Kellie Property Solutions on behalf of The Hut Group.

A planning statement said: "Whilst the hotel was recognised as Manchester’s first boutique hotel when The Great John Street Hotel began operating in 2005, the hotel is in need of a comprehensive refurbishment to bring the offer up to the quality and standard expected for a luxury boutique hotel in Manchester in 2020 and beyond.

"The existing hotel was opened in 2005, and has not been significantly upgraded since.
