Lower House in Hopton Castle brings peace and serenity in face of battle

Lower House is the perfect property for Civil War history buffs.

As old as Lower House in Hopton Castle, near Craven Arms in Shropshire, clearly is, it pales in age-comparison with a near neighbour.

The Grade II listed property dates back to the .

But sitting opposite it is the ancient tower house of Hopton Castle, the fortress that gave the hamlet its name and which can trace its history back to around the 12th or 13th century.

Though it has features relating to the 11th and 12th century, the castle may have been built in an old-fashioned style to give its owners increased status.

It is famous for being besieged for a month during the Civil War.

At that time it was owned by the Wallops, who were Parliamentarians.

A garrison of 30 held out against Prince Rupert’s troops before they surrendered and were callously killed.

The keep is all that remains and is now managed by the Hopton Castle Preservation Trust as a visitor attraction.
